Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12
In the past month, I happened to meet two 94-year olds – at different places and different times.
Both of them, walking and talking. Healthy as can be. It truly was amazing!
Being the kind of person that I am, I struck up conversations (accidentally) with them. I had no idea they were 94 until I started chatting. So I just had to ask,
“What is the secret to a long life?”
And you won’t believe that both of them said the same exact thing. Now, these are two 94 year olds who don’t even know each other. One was a woman getting her pedicure and manicure done (no, I’m not kidding. She had her nails done in a pretty red color). The other was a man scouring for the best humidifier at Walmart.
Their response to my question was,
Coincidence?! I don’t know, but it sure was quite interesting to hear literally the same exact answer!
The woman was a military wife that traveled the whole globe, moving every two years. She said she absolutely loved the adventure of going to a new place. And the man retired at 60, sold his house, and then traveled the whole United States in an RV with his wife. This travel-loving couple even went to Europe a few times.
As they were telling me about their busy and full lives, I was trying to think what the Bible says on this matter. I remembered Proverbs talks a lot about laziness. At least 20 passages in Proverbs talk about this particular subject. God truly wants us to be busy people. He wants us to be busy physically AND spiritually. There is no time to waste on this earth! Jesus said in Luke 10:2
“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
There is so much work to be done for the Lord. So many who still do not know Christ! Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom, a wife, a teacher, a dentist, or a combination of many listed, God wants us to be working. Now of course God commands us to rest on the 7th day, since even God himself rested Genesis tells us. But stay busy, my friend! You might not live to be 94, but that’s ok! You won’t regret living this life for God.
Know some elderly folks? Ask them what the secret to a long life is!
