Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves. Philippians 2:3
I was at a wedding and there was a couple there who were together 57 years. We asked them, “What is the secret to a long life together?” The elderly man got up and with gusto replied, “The secret is to always value your spouse above yourself.”
As the man spoke those words, I remembered how Jesus always called His people to be humble. He never once said to consider yourself better or more worthy of anyone else. So the advice given made complete sense. In his own lifetime, the man knew Jesus’ words are completely right. God’s advice never fails. He knows how to make relationships lasts a lifetime because God is the one who made something called marriage in the first place.
This man in his 57 years together with his beloved could testify just how true those words ring even in the 21st century where marriages are falling apart left and right. People think the advice in the Bible isn’t good enough anymore. And that is exactly why so many marriages are in shambles. There is simply not enough humbleness.
Know someone who has been together for many years? Ask them what’s “the secret” and share together what answers you have received.
